There are so many terrific places are opening up all over Red Deer that help women just like you try something new. They are all empowering, exciting, and fun! We started this Challenge as a way to share great LOCALLY OWNED gyms and activities with you with the hope that seeing us trying new things you will be inspired to try something new too.
We all know the benefits of living an active life. Many of my life experiences have forced me to carefully analyze my habits and carefully consider my future. Our Mom passed away at 39 years old, and in just a couple weeks I turn 35. As many already know, a best friend of mine passed away last August at 33. With 2 businesses, 2 busy kids, and entering middle age, I realized its never been more important that I take more control over my health and wellness and really start incorporating new routines and habits into my daily life. I want to be an example to our girls and show them what it means to take care of ME first. I am a vital part of this family's experiences. I am important to the people around me. My health MATTERS! And now that I've been living this new active lifestyle for a full year now, and am reaping the physical and emotional benefits of it every day, I am ready to kick it up a notch and step outside my comfort zone a little. AND.... I'm hauling the Bra Lounge Girls along for the ride!
Our first Challenge was at Ryde RD for a 45 minute spin class. We had no idea what to expect! The room was packed with cyclists, the music was blaring, the lights were off and colourful splashes of spotlights were flashing around the room. It was so exciting! I'm blind as a bat but I wont wear my glasses to exercise, so I felt a little claustrophobic as we began. We snapped our fancy cycling shoes into the pedals, and took a minute to coordinate ourselves on the bikes. This was harder than we thought it would be. You have to stand up and sit down as you go through the class so getting the hang of that while peddling is very important. You can adjust the tension as you go through the routine to increase or decrease your effort, and you will at some point be peddling without using your hands - in fact, you'll be using hand weights too so getting your coordination down is important!
One of the hardest things to get used to was the hard seat in your crotch. This became apparent very early on in the session. Why do they make those seats so hard!? And NARROW?? If you can get through that discomfort, they say by your third session you are good to go. It's possible by then you are just permanently numb.
Throughout the session we moved through cycles of slow to fast peddling, sitting and standing, and using the light hand weights. The bursts of effort feel incredible, and with the encouragement of the instructor you will feel energized to push through your discomfort and rock your workout! If you need to slow down and catch your breath you can - they just encourage you to keep peddling. What I love about these environments is that everyone in the room can be at different abilities; some can be brand new like we were, others can be regulars, and each can work at a pace that is comfortable for them. Its YOUR workout. You paid to be here! So you can move through the session pushing yourself when it feels right and taking it easy when you need to. At no point do you feel intimidated or pressured. The atmosphere is so empowering!
Once you're going it doesn't take long for the room to get hot and the floor to ceiling mirrors to grow foggy. This feels a little intense but as the sweat drips down your face you will feel incredible. Your heart is racing, your arms and legs are throbbing, you think if you lean too far one way or the other you will just fall into a heap on the floor. (You wont. Because you cant. You're still clipped into your peddles.) Just when you think you can't continue, they will announce that its time for cool down. They "walk" you through a few stretches which feel pretty great on those tired legs. When its finally time to dismount, walking feels very foreign! They hand you these fabulously cold and fresh towels to wipe your face and neck, and you take your shoes off. (DO NOT try walking on the floor with these shoes on - they are very slippery!)
And you're done! YOU ROCKED IT!
All in all, the 3 of us who took in our first spin class at Ryde RD loved it. None of us had tried before, and 2 of 3 of us do not exercise regularly. A spin class is an incredible way to get a great cardio work out in regardless of your fitness level. Even going once a week will help you get comfortable on the bike and get a terrific weekly work out in!
What we wore: Now for a quick overview of what we wore: I wore my MarieJo Action Intense full support underwire sports bra. It started to feel really tight halfway through as my lungs were desperate for a full breath of air, but as usual it kept me contained and comfortable throughout my workout. I also wore my Hanky Panky thong which did not ride up or bother me at all!
Cortney goes for her Anita full support non-underwire bra, and her Anita workout short. She felt great and well supported throughout her workout. Even a boxer short style bottom felt great and didnt bunch or ride up.
Steph wore her Knixwear All-In-One workout bra, and her matching Knixwear thong. If you're not familiar, Knixwear is a Canadian label focusing on offering women moisture wicking, odor controlling athletic undergarments. She couldn't believe how comfortable she was!
Right now you can go to your first session for just $7!
Just stop into The Bra Lounge to pick up your coupon, then get on the Ryde website to book your session! You'll be SO GLAD you did!
