Challenge #2 was probably our favourite, not because it worked us the hardest, but because it was unique and adventurous!
Last weekend we went on a Yoga and Snowshoeing Adventure with the fine women behind Pursuit Adventures and Love|Yoga|Grace. It was a chilly Sunday morning when we strapped snowshoes onto our boots and headed out through Kerry Wood Nature Centre with a great team of gals, many of who hadn't tried snowshoeing before (unless you include junior high gym class). Snowshoeing is SO much easier than I thought it might be! They are lightweight and easy to use, once you get the hang of walking with your legs a little further apart. Hiking up a hill is WAY easier, and you don't even know when you're walking on slippery sections of trail with the great grip. Something we learned from Dani, part owner of Pursuit Adventures, was that you don't actually walk on top of the snow in snowshoes. You do still sink slightly, but it makes it far easier to navigate the terrain. We had to try walking off the trail to see how that felt, and it was interesting to see how much harder it was than using the trail. Dani stopped many times along our little hike to share cool facts about the animals, environment, and the activity of snowshoeing itself. The guided hike brings so much more to the experience! Then, a few of us had a little footrace back to the Centre to see what running would feel like. Because the shoes are lightweight, its actually pretty easy when you get your coordination down.
Pursuit Adventures offer's tours, adventures and transportation for the entire family, for a great price. They are an experienced and professional husband and wife team who bring their love for our beautiful province and adventure to you!
Back to our day.... once the snowshoeing part of our morning was over, we went inside a private room at Kerry Wood Nature Centre for tea, homemade hot chocolate, marshmallows (TRY THIS RECIPE!!!!) and other light provisions. Then we settled down onto our mats and kicked off yoga with my favourite part, Savasana, to relax and prepare. We moved through some of my favourite poses, including Sun Salutation and Warrior. These poses have always made me feel strong and free and proud. It's a beautiful thing to work through poses, challenge your body, and then feel your heartbeat and as Kelly says, "admire your work". Many in the room had not tried yoga before, but the atmosphere is warm and inviting. Kelly validates your work and she corrects you when needed. She gives a few different options for the poses using bolsters, blankets, and blocks to help those who want to go deeper, and for those just starting to get familiar with the pose without strain. Yoga with Kelly is a great work out while being a really fun time with cool people!
As with our experience at RYDE RD (read it here), anyone can take part in these activities at their own pace and ability. You dont feel like you're not keeping up, and you have other's further along to watch and learn from. Which means you can register for these activities with your friends, family, and coworkers without worrying about someone being left out. Check out the websites for both these terrific local businesses and sign yourself up for something new!
