Being the Mom of a family is not always easy, its not always fun, but it IS always worth it. We were delighted to put together a Mother's Day contest this year, accepting your nominations for Mom's in your life who inspire you everyday with their work ethic, determination, or just for having a huge caring heart. We received some beautiful stories and had a very hard time narrowing down the field to just 4 women. But we did, and then we gave them new bra and panty sets, and then we dolled them up and gave them champagne and had a little photoshoot! It was SUCH FUN!
Nominated by her daughter Sammi, Holly's story hit us close to home. She has been a member of victim services for over 20 years. With that, she has had to be the one notifying families of deaths, attending court dates with victims, be there for children of sexual assault cases or people who lost their homes to fires, and so much more. She did things other people couldn't even imagine doing. She had so much training and focused her life around helping other people in our community and surrounding areas. Little did she know one day she would be in the situation where she needed the help when her oldest child and only son was killed in a car accident only just over a KM from the family home in Alix, in 2008. Her best friend from victim services that she had worked along side with for years was the one to notify her. Sammi writes "I still have no idea how my parents persevered from that after now having 2 sons of my own it's my worse fear. My mom STAYED with victim services even after this tragedy and continued offering her services on scenes of accidents, fires, court dates etc. There is no way I can explain the amazing grandmother and mother she is. She does things for us every single day. She is selfless and is so so strong. She recently retired this year after 20 years with victim services to focus on time with her family and healing her own mind. She now volunteers with dogs with wings service dogs, taking them to court, homes, etc to offer healing to the victims . My mom deserves so much there is just no way people and my sister and I could ever thank her for the things she has done. She deserves to win this!"
We certainly agreed. Why did this story touch us so? Because 21 years ago when our Mom was in a car accident just a KM down the road from our home, 3 kids were home alone when the heaviest weight we'll ever feel was dropped on us by a cold police officer. We would have given anything for a woman, specifically a MOTHER, to have been there with love, softness, and strength, to wrap us up until we could be with our Dad hours later. We are beyond proud of Holly and everyone who selflessly volunteers for Victim Services to help other's get through what might be the hardest moment of their lives.
Holly - congratulations! And thank you for all you do.
Writes Brie "My mom has always been a huge support to my two sisters and I, and these past few months have been no exception. My oldest sister Tesha recently had a baby in March and Mom and Dad drove out from Ontario to be with her to help with the baby. They stayed in Edmonton for 6 weeks entertaining and grandparenting the older three kids and cuddling a newborn so the tired mom could rest.
They left Edmonton in their trailer with the intention of having a holiday before returning to Red Deer early June to help me with my 5th baby. They headed south to Waterton National Park. 5 days into their trip my dad wouldn't wake up one morning and my mom called an ambulance. He was in a comatose state for 20 hours or more with little explanation as to why. It's been 5 scary days since, and thankfully my dad is awake and talking. He's currently awaiting for tests in Calgary to determine how his heart is and if there is any damage."
Brenda had just lived through her worst nightmare, at a time when she was supposed to be celebrating the birth of 2 new babies to her family. Not only did she have a postpartum daughter, but also another daughter giving birth any day, while now also having Doctors and tests and stress from her husbands health scare. She shared her selfless concern for her family at a time when she could have just focused on herself. She had to focus her concern on everyone and they got through day by day.
Concluding, Brie say's "I was going to get her a bottle of vodka, but anything from The Bra Lounge would be far better!!"
We were honored to celebrate Brenda before she headed back home to help her husband continue his road to recovery. When she came in for her fitting with us, she said "I realized I was not ready to be a widow." We hope a little pampering and a beautiful new bra helped Brenda feel energized and so loved after such a terrifying ordeal. Congratulations Brenda, it was wonderful to meet you, and we know now we'll see you again on your next trip to cuddle all your babies!
At 19, Corrie was travelling with friends in the United States and was involved in a serious car accident. She broke her pelvis, had a punctured lung, had half her spleen removed, and suffered injury to her shoulder which required surgery years later. Corrie also struggles with many health issues and chronic pain. She has no cartilage in her knees so even going up stairs is painful. There is no surgery that our health care system will try and perform to fix that. She has been to emergency twice in the last month with chest pain, shortness of breath and a long list of other symptoms. She has recently had many xrays, a CT scan, and a pile of blood work done, yet she still continues to push on with daily life. The physical and emotional scars of all this have left their mark, so having the chance to spoil Corrie with beautiful undergarments was wonderful. We hope she feels as beautiful as she looks!
Tragically, Corrie lost her mom this past October to a terrible battle with stage 4 pancreatic cancer, for which where was no chance for successful treatment. Corrie was the main caregiver through her Mom's illness from Feb to Oct; the last few months requiring care that only few would be willing to provide for a loved one. Selflessly, Corrie stayed by her Mom's side at home as she passed away. It has been a devastating loss for her, as she was very close to her mom, and 'Nana' was also very close to their son. Corrie and Elliott spent a lot of time over the years staying at Nana's house in Stettler, enjoying all the time they could with her.
If you are familiar with Rebels Hockey, you may recognize her name. Even through all this, she still manages to sing the National Anthem for our Rebels at the home games this season, and has done so for 10 years now!
Corrie has seen many tough years, and the last 12 months have been especially hard. Despite it all, her husband and son think she is Super Mom! We are proud to celebrate you Corrie, and are grateful to your husband for sharing your powerful story with us.
Annette's family experienced the difficult loss of a baby during pregnancy, and this event spurred her to search out support for her daughter dealing with the loss. She started the Walk with Angels in support of Infant and Pregnancy Loss Awareness, the goal of which is to remove the stigma of the topic and offer a safe, caring place for those suffering a loss to talk about their feeling and celebrate lost life. Stephanie says " I became a mother in 2016 and I'm so grateful for the hardworking, positive and supportive example she has provided for me. Her whole life has been focused on helping others, particularly her children and grandchildren. For years, she went without just so her children could have everything they would ever need."
Annette is truly an inspiration. We feel so blessed to have met her and had the chance to celebrate her on behalf of her family!
