What a way to put a bow on our 10th year in business. What an incredible honour to be chosen as THE BEST small business in the city. We just cant put into words how special that night was, or how special every single message and comment of congratulations is. Women who knew our Mom are messaging from all over Alberta to express their well wishes and share stories of her. There truly could be no greater honour than to have the chance to share her legacy with the community that has helped make our dreams come true. This has been the highlight of this Bra Lounge journey, no question.
Up on that stage, in front of our colleagues, mentors, and friends, we felt it so necessary to give the credit to one person who's life shaped ours the most. But talking about something so emotional for us, in the spotlight we were under, was terrifying! Needless to say, the words came when they needed to and although I missed mentioning our incredible husbands who have to put up with so much to let us follow this dream - oops - I did say what I needed to for our dear Mama.
Here's the jist!
"30 years ago, 2 little girls had a dream of owning their own business, because they were too bossy and stubborn to play well with others, and couldn't imagine having to work for someone else. 20 years ago, our family faced the worst tragedy of our lives, an event that crippled us and blew up everything we thought our future would look like. 10 years ago, we jumped on an opportunity to put a childhood dream into motion. And 10 years later, here we are."
She's our WHY
She was a farm girl from Saskatchewan, and I'm confident most people reading would know why that matters. Work ethic, humour, open-mindedness, loyalty, drive, compassion- we got so many qualities that have helped us to keep her present in our lives. We often talk to her about the store, what would she do, what should be next, and we always get the answer. We are grateful to be where we are today, but the years leading up to this moment have not exactly been a fairy tail.
In the weeks after she passed, it was with shock and devastation that we realized how much Mom did for the family. She was infused in every conversation, every step, every plan, every decision. And in the blink of an eye, we were alone. I was the oldest, Cortney next, so at 13 and 15 we took on all the household as well as the farm responsibilities while Dad worked away. I handled outside chores and the animals, Cortney managed the house. We were lost, insecure, terrified. We were alone, often 5 days a week, while Dad worked to keep our family afloat. It truly is like a very bad dream and we had no idea when it would end.
It took 10 years to come out of that haze. A long, miserable, scary 10 years. We graduated and tried to move forward, but still we were lost. Holidays didn't mean the same as they used to, and we worried we would never feel fulfilled and truly happy again. But - that's when our The Bra Lounge journey began. February 1, 2007. We had nothing to lose, and only one way to go - UP! We knew we wanted to help women like our Mom who deserved everyday comfort and security as she ran tirelessly from one responsibility to another. We also wanted to help girls like us who didn't know where to go or how to ask for help if they didn't have that experienced woman in their lives. We wanted to couple better quality products with compassionate, respectful customer service. We better understood now the challenges and obstacles in a woman's daily life, and we wanted to give more to make everyday life better.
Now, another 10 years later, everything has changed. I would give anything to go back and hug those poor kids who cried into their pillows every night. Those kids who didn't know what life could look like without the one person who knew everything about us, our needs, our struggles, our history. Those poor kids had no idea that life could, and would, turn around and come with more gifts than we ever dreamed. Today business is thriving; we have reliable staff who show up everyday excited to share their passion with their customers. We are now married with kids, which has changed everything about our excitement for family holidays. Those 3 little girls have filled our hearts with love and happiness we never dreamed we would feel again, and have helped us to feel even closer to Mom now that we are experiencing what she was as a wife and mother. Our little brother is engaged to be married to his own Saskatchewan farm girl - proving our angel in heaven is still pulling some strings!! And Dad is finding fulfillment in being Papa and sharing stories of having his own young family.
20 years later. Business of the Year. WHAT?! How?! I know how. Its all because of her. Its all because of her love, and our loss. Our story has everything to do with the Mom, wife, friend and woman she was, but it would look much different had we never experienced losing her. Losing her was as important as having her.
20 years ago life gave us lemons. Today, our lemonade as never been sweeter.
Thanks to everyone for your love and encouragement. Cheers to the next 10 years!

We are thrilled to be giving away FREE BRAS FOR A YEAR at our upcoming Favourite Things Fashion Show, but when the event sold out in just 30 hours we decided to give everyone who didn't get a ticket a chance to win this incredible prize too!
All proceeds from the raffle go to Cystic Fibrosis Canada. For more information on the cause and why we chose to support it, click here. There are a total of 500 tickets printed and can only be purchased in store or at the event. The winner will be announced on Facebook Live from the Favourite Things Fashion Show, Saturday November 4th, 2017.
For the month of October you can buy $5 raffle tickets to enter.
The winner will receive a $100 credit every month for an entire YEAR, to be spent monthly or be saved up for a spree!
The winner can chose to SHARE 6 months worth of credit with a friend!
How it'll work: The credit is recorded under the winners file in our records. It is for a $100 credit monthly, which can be saved up month to month but the winner cannot go over the amount available at the time she is in. Should she go over, she must pay the difference, or wait for the next month to save up more credit. The winner agrees to let us share her shopping trips with our followers all year long with picture's or video of her visits. (Nothing invasive - just a chance to show others what a year long shopping spree looks like!) Should the winner chose to gift a friend or family member with half her credits, she can arrange to give her friend a credit every second month, or the whole last 6 months in a row, or 3 months at a time; whatever the two of them decide, as long as credits are not redeemed in the same month. Each recipient will be given $600 in credits and will not be allowed to go into each other's credits. If at the end of the period there are still credits remaining they will be loaded onto a gift card and cleared out.
Thank you for supporting Cystic Fibrosis Canada.
UPDATE: We WON Small Business of the Year!
A few months ago we were excited to find out we'd been nominated for Business of the Year with the Chamber of Commerce Red Deer. We fall into the Small Business category with less than 10 employees, and this is the second time in 5 years we were recognized by our community members in this way. Last time though, we were a little overwhelmed with the whole thing and were almost relived when our friends over at 360 Fitness took it home!
*holy crap we should have prepared a speech - we looked at each other in horror before they announced the winner*
This year is different. We've come a long way in 5 years! Our business has expanded, our families have expanded, and we have far more confidence in our knowledge and abilities now. We are so ready this year! We might even prepare a speech :)
We're even more excited this year as the competition is FIERCE! We are up against Sabrina at Fetch Haus - Red Deer's only independent pet food and grooming salon, and Bonnie and Krista with The Breathing Room Yoga Studio!
We did our pre-awards interview with Todayville (watch the site for all the BOTYA updates!) and it got us reminiscing as he asked us so many deep questions. What's it like to be a woman in business in Red Deer? It was a tough one to answer - not because we couldn't think of anything, but because there are so many reasons. The community spirit in Red Deer and all of Central Alberta is incredible. People make a conscious choice everyday to support their local businesses every chance they get. They support you at events in the community, and online. They share your news with their friends and loved ones because they truly appreciate what you offer and want others to know about it. This community has given us the chance to fulfill our childhood dreams of becoming entrepreneurs, being impactful in a big way, and helping women who deserve a friendly smile and authentic, compassionate service. We are so proud and grateful for this.
Funny little thing, we grew up in Sundre, Alberta, and going to Red Deer was always a fun trip to make. We learned from our Dad a few years after setting up shop that our Mom always loved Red Deer, and could always see herself living here. There's no question in our minds that she is here every second of the day with us, enjoying this little journey with us, It would be nice if she offered to babysit for a night or two... :)
The Awards are coming up on October 18th. We cant wait to celebrate with some powerhouse Boss Babes and see who takes home the prestigious Business of the Year Award!
The BEST Girl's Night Out in Central Alberta returns with the
2nd Annual Bra Lounge
Favourite Things Fashion Show!
SOLD OUT IN 30 HOURS!!
We're wrapping up our 10th year in business with another customer appreciation and fundraiser for a cause near to our hearts, Cystic Fibrosis Canada.
Imagine your child's diagnosis at 3 weeks old, 2 years old, 8 years old. The age doesn't matter. All that matters is that how a "terminal" diagnosis rock's a family forever.
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian children and young adults.
At present, there is no cure.
CF causes various effects on the body, but mainly affects the digestive system and lungs. The degree of CF severity differs from person to person, however, the persistence and ongoing infection in the lungs, with destruction of lungs and loss of lung function, will eventually lead to death in the majority of people with CF.
A special little girl in our lives has inspired us to become more aware of and want to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis Canada - a world leader in CF research! We are proud to support a Foundation that is expected to make a breakthrough in the next decade, changing the lives and the futures of thousands of Canadian families!

This time of the year, women are looking for basic t-shirt friendly bras that will give great shape under tighter fitting summer shirts and tank tops, while being neutral colours that disappear under light colours. Every few days a client comes in specifically requesting a beige moulded cup bra for summer, and often, that IS exactly what she needs. However, occasionally the conversation looks a little more like this:
Fitter: What are you looking for today?
Customer: I think I need a new beige tshirt bra.
Fitter: Something to go under white tops? Something that is smooth under tshirts?
Customer: Yes... but I will need a dark one too because most of my shirts are dark colours. I pretty much only wear dark colours I guess.
Fitter: Ok, how often then do you wear white?
Customer: ... never!?
Fitter: Do you feel like you really need a beige bra then? And what do you wear to work?
Customer: Yes I guess you're right, I've just always had a beige bra! But now that I think of it, I often wish I had two dark bras, especially on laundry day. To work, I wear a lot of patterns, dark colours, button up blouses, nothing too tight fitting.
Fitter: Have you ever tried a soft cup? You can get really cute colours and prints in soft cup bras!
Customer: No, I always thought for my cup size, moulded cups would give me more support?
Fitter: Oh no, you can get all the support you need in a soft cup too. The seams and lace are there to pull your breast tissue forward and offer natural shape, and you might love how light and breathable they are.
Customer: Ok sure, show me a couple of those, and a couple dark coloured moulded cups too!
Our fitter returns with styles to try, and the Customer loves how lightweight the soft cups are and how great the colours are! She tries on her blouse with it and realizes you cant see the seams at all, and she still has great shape. She leaves with a navy blue moulded cup bra, and a lacy soft cup, teal with black piping, and a matching panty! She ends up having the two of them for close to 2 years, because she is able to alternate between them and make them last far longer!
The truth about basics is, we all have different colour tones in our skin, so beige or nude coloured bras are not actually basics for everyone. Women with paler skin tones need a different colour to go under white than women with darker skin. And women who dont wear light colours dont even need to worry about it!
Women with lighter skin tones are able to wear reds, pinks, and even yellows and have them be invisible under light coloured tops. Women with darker skin tones can wear any dark colour they like, but should stay away from light colours. Your basic bra that needs to be invisible under lighter tops should be close to the shade of your skin, and could be one of many different colours. Even the colours of a nude or beige bra can vary from a light tan to a darker chocolate!
When it comes to the material of the bra, there is a misconception that moulded cups are the best for support and shape. Moulded cups are more mainstream and better known. Like the customer above, you might be surprised to find that a soft lacy cup actually fits perfectly into your wardrobe! If you wear heavier fabrics, if you layer, or if you wear patters, you can easily wear a soft cup as an everyday basic, and enjoy the prints and colours that come in great bra and panty sets! If you more often wear tighter fitting tops, and light colours, you may always prefer the look of a moulded cup bra in a colour that matches your skin tone.
So the truth about basics is that any colour could be considered a basic! Next time you're in getting a fitting, we challenge you to step outside your norm, and try a few new options! You're whole bra collection could take a new turn!
FINALLY! The images from our Mother's Day photoshoot are ready, the blog is written (through tears, I won't lie....) and we are thrilled for the chance to share some pretty special women with you.
Being the Mom of a family is not always easy, its not always fun, but it IS always worth it. We were delighted to put together a Mother's Day contest this year, accepting your nominations for Mom's in your life who inspire you everyday with their work ethic, determination, or just for having a huge caring heart. We received some beautiful stories and had a very hard time narrowing down the field to just 4 women. But we did, and then we gave them new bra and panty sets, and then we dolled them up and gave them champagne and had a little photoshoot! It was SUCH FUN!
Starting with Holly, top left.
Nominated by her daughter Sammi, Holly's story hit us close to home. She has been a member of victim services for over 20 years. With that, she has had to be the one notifying families of deaths, attending court dates with victims, be there for children of sexual assault cases or people who lost their homes to fires, and so much more. She did things other people couldn't even imagine doing. She had so much training and focused her life around helping other people in our community and surrounding areas. Little did she know one day she would be in the situation where she needed the help when her oldest child and only son was killed in a car accident only just over a KM from the family home in Alix, in 2008. Her best friend from victim services that she had worked along side with for years was the one to notify her. Sammi writes "I still have no idea how my parents persevered from that after now having 2 sons of my own it's my worse fear. My mom STAYED with victim services even after this tragedy and continued offering her services on scenes of accidents, fires, court dates etc. There is no way I can explain the amazing grandmother and mother she is. She does things for us every single day. She is selfless and is so so strong. She recently retired this year after 20 years with victim services to focus on time with her family and healing her own mind. She now volunteers with dogs with wings service dogs, taking them to court, homes, etc to offer healing to the victims . My mom deserves so much there is just no way people and my sister and I could ever thank her for the things she has done. She deserves to win this!"
We certainly agreed. Why did this story touch us so? Because 21 years ago when our Mom was in a car accident just a KM down the road from our home, 3 kids were home alone when the heaviest weight we'll ever feel was dropped on us by a cold police officer. We would have given anything for a woman, specifically a MOTHER, to have been there with love, softness, and strength, to wrap us up until we could be with our Dad hours later. We are beyond proud of Holly and everyone who selflessly volunteers for Victim Services to help other's get through what might be the hardest moment of their lives.
Holly - congratulations! And thank you for all you do.
Brenda is next in the picture, sitting to the left of Holly. Nominated by her daughter Brienen, who would have nominated her anyways, but ended up having even more reasons the same week we posted the contest, when her Mom found her Dad unresponsive one morning.
Writes Brie "My mom has always been a huge support to my two sisters and I, and these past few months have been no exception. My oldest sister Tesha recently had a baby in March and Mom and Dad drove out from Ontario to be with her to help with the baby. They stayed in Edmonton for 6 weeks entertaining and grandparenting the older three kids and cuddling a newborn so the tired mom could rest.
They left Edmonton in their trailer with the intention of having a holiday before returning to Red Deer early June to help me with my 5th baby. They headed south to Waterton National Park. 5 days into their trip my dad wouldn't wake up one morning and my mom called an ambulance. He was in a comatose state for 20 hours or more with little explanation as to why. It's been 5 scary days since, and thankfully my dad is awake and talking. He's currently awaiting for tests in Calgary to determine how his heart is and if there is any damage."
Brenda had just lived through her worst nightmare, at a time when she was supposed to be celebrating the birth of 2 new babies to her family. Not only did she have a postpartum daughter, but also another daughter giving birth any day, while now also having Doctors and tests and stress from her husbands health scare. She shared her selfless concern for her family at a time when she could have just focused on herself. She had to focus her concern on everyone and they got through day by day.
Concluding, Brie say's "I was going to get her a bottle of vodka, but anything from The Bra Lounge would be far better!!"
We were honored to celebrate Brenda before she headed back home to help her husband continue his road to recovery. When she came in for her fitting with us, she said "I realized I was not ready to be a widow." We hope a little pampering and a beautiful new bra helped Brenda feel energized and so loved after such a terrifying ordeal. Congratulations Brenda, it was wonderful to meet you, and we know now we'll see you again on your next trip to cuddle all your babies!
Sitting on the floor in the group photo is Corrie, nominated by her husband Max. Corrie is Mom to their 9 year old son Elliot, who has Autism. She has home schooled Elliot since grade 1. Max writes "I remember vividly the day late in Grade 1 when he asked us why everything in life was so frustrating and that he thought we would be better off if he wasn't alive. Not something you want to hear from your child. It was extremely hard work for Corrie continually having to advocate for our son with teachers and administrators who did not understand him and could not provide enough supports for him to succeed. Homeschooling has been a constant and difficult challenge for Corrie, but we have seen exceptional progress with our son at home and I credit that to her hard work, understanding of his challenges and the seemingly endless amount of time she has spent learning about his disability since he was diagnosed at the age of 4."
At 19, Corrie was travelling with friends in the United States and was involved in a serious car accident. She broke her pelvis, had a punctured lung, had half her spleen removed, and suffered injury to her shoulder which required surgery years later. Corrie also struggles with many health issues and chronic pain. She has no cartilage in her knees so even going up stairs is painful. There is no surgery that our health care system will try and perform to fix that. She has been to emergency twice in the last month with chest pain, shortness of breath and a long list of other symptoms. She has recently had many xrays, a CT scan, and a pile of blood work done, yet she still continues to push on with daily life. The physical and emotional scars of all this have left their mark, so having the chance to spoil Corrie with beautiful undergarments was wonderful. We hope she feels as beautiful as she looks!
Tragically, Corrie lost her mom this past October to a terrible battle with stage 4 pancreatic cancer, for which where was no chance for successful treatment. Corrie was the main caregiver through her Mom's illness from Feb to Oct; the last few months requiring care that only few would be willing to provide for a loved one. Selflessly, Corrie stayed by her Mom's side at home as she passed away. It has been a devastating loss for her, as she was very close to her mom, and 'Nana' was also very close to their son. Corrie and Elliott spent a lot of time over the years staying at Nana's house in Stettler, enjoying all the time they could with her.
If you are familiar with Rebels Hockey, you may recognize her name. Even through all this, she still manages to sing the National Anthem for our Rebels at the home games this season, and has done so for 10 years now!
Corrie has seen many tough years, and the last 12 months have been especially hard. Despite it all, her husband and son think she is Super Mom! We are proud to celebrate you Corrie, and are grateful to your husband for sharing your powerful story with us.
Our fourth Mom is Annette, nominated by her daughter Stephanie, who writes "There are so many deserving moms out there, but I would like to tell you the story of mine. My parents split up when I was about 6 years old. My father left the province and chose not to pay any form of child support leaving my mom the only provider for her three children. Although she worked three jobs to make ends meet, I don't remember a time when she wasn't at a hockey game or other sporting event being the loudest one in the crowd cheering us on! 2016 was a year of mixed emotions for our family. We welcomed three beautiful new additions, however my mother also lost one of her best friends, my Grandmother. My mom is one of the most beautiful people I know, inside and out, even though she often doesn't see herself that way."
Annette's family experienced the difficult loss of a baby during pregnancy, and this event spurred her to search out support for her daughter dealing with the loss. She started the Walk with Angels in support of Infant and Pregnancy Loss Awareness, the goal of which is to remove the stigma of the topic and offer a safe, caring place for those suffering a loss to talk about their feeling and celebrate lost life. Stephanie says " I became a mother in 2016 and I'm so grateful for the hardworking, positive and supportive example she has provided for me. Her whole life has been focused on helping others, particularly her children and grandchildren. For years, she went without just so her children could have everything they would ever need."
Annette is truly an inspiration. We feel so blessed to have met her and had the chance to celebrate her on behalf of her family!

We'll do this again next spring, and we know there are no shortage of amazing women to honor. It is truly a wonderful feeling to be able to give in this way, and we cant wait to do it again.
Happy Mother's Day.
Its that time again! Bridal Season!
We've been helping Bridal parties pull their looks together for 10 years. We'd love to share with you some BIG lessons we've learned along the way to help you plan ahead and have a perfect day.
BRIDES DRESS STYLE
We know you have a perfect dress style in mind and you'll do just about anything to make it happen - and we want to help! Our advice: Get Fitted First!!! Find out what your true bra size is and how a great fitting bra should feel before starting your hunt for the dress! If you've been wearing the typical band-too-big-cups-too-small styles from conventional stores, you'll struggle to find a bra that works anyways. Learn more about your style options and you'll have the foundation in place for the perfect dress!!
You may think you could never wear a halter dress due to your size, only to find out a great fitting strapless bra is absolutely in reach, at a great price! BONUS: a strapless bra is not a one time use garment - you'll love the opportunity to get new styles of tops with a flattering, secure style underneath.
What we are trying to avoid for you is something we've seen happen season after season - a bride who falls in love with a strapless or backless dress without first considering what she'll wear underneath. Depending on your bust size, a super tight fitting strapless might not be your idea of a good time. Or you may find out you're bust size is too large for a backless adhesive bra. On this very important day, you want to look great but feel even better. Comfort matters.
Bottom line - get fitted before and avoid possible disappointment later!
BRIDESMAID DRESS STYLE
The day IS all about you, Brides. No question. However, please carefully consider your girls when choosing the looks you want them in. What I love about the picture below is that each bridesmaid is in a dress that flatters HER body. Each member of the group will be a different shape, so to ask them all to wear the same style of dress is unfair. Far too often we've had busty bridesmaids in tears in the fitting room because they cant find a strapless/skinny shoulder/plunging bra to go with a dress, and they are afraid of what their Bride is going to say about it. What they are often feeling in that moment is shame about their bodies, and different from the other girls. Over a dress.
Please keep in mind, these women are often paying for their dress, paying for their undergarments, and doing their best to support you on your big day! Repay the love by being flexible and accommodating - we promise you, her confidence and pride will be reflected in your pictures and memories!
**If you're a bride who wants you're whole party to come in and #getfitted - email us to make arrangements and we'll make it worth your while! Email Fittings@TheBraLounge.ca with a couple dates and we'll do our best to accommodate!**
There is a misconception that what you wear under your dress is the same sexy little number you plan to reveal later to your new groom. Just think about this.... its a hot summer day, and you're sticky and sweaty in all the worst places!! Already... you get it....
Invest in functional undergarments to keep you comfortable while flattering your body under your dress. Then, have a blast picking out lingerie as class or sassy as you want to be on your first night as husband and wife! Our fitters know how to offer items that will make you feel as incredible as you look, and they do it with discretion to help you feel the way he see's you - beautiful inside and out.
FOR THE GUYS
You know we believe great underwear can make for a perfect day! If your gals are good, make sure the guys are also suited up for the big day. Check out Twig & Barry's Underwear Company for groomsman gift ideas!
Celebrating women is what we do. Its ALL we want to do.
As many of you know, our Mom passed away in a car accident when we were teens. In the weeks after her passing, as we struggled to come to terms with our new reality, we realized how much our Mom had done everyday for our family. The endless hours she put into her day to keep up with the duties on the farm, to keep up with her 3 busy kids, and to keep up at her job as a Nurses Aid in a Nursing Home. That woman did not have it easy, but she wouldnt have had it any other way. I know she would not have had any regrets. She had packed a ton of lessons into those very few years with us. She was the reason we were able to move forward, although it took a long time to do without her. Today we are better Mom's, wives, and friends because of her. She left a legacy that will last generations.
Our Mom was the inspiration behind this business. We always wanted to be entrepreneurs, and when Cortney learned about bra fittings and better quality brands, she became passionate about educating women on options that would enhance and improve the quality of their lives. That's where the dream started.
So here we are, 10 years in, and still focused on those very important people in the world - Mom's. Of course, we are focused on women in general, because Mom or not, we all deserve everyday comfort and quality to live our best lives. But as Mother's Day approaches, we want to shine a spotlight on the Mom's in your life who go above and beyond for their families, specifically on the Mom's who have recently endured or are enduring hardships. Mommying is HARD sometimes, but Mommying while also dealing with a recent diagnosis, trauma, or death, can complicate things far beyond measure. We know. And we want to help in our own little way.
We are now accepting your nominations for Mom's in your life who deserve some special Bra Lounge Love this Mother's Day. We all know the importance of taking care of Mom so she can take care of the family, and that's what this is all about. Send us her story of struggle and resilience, and she could be chosen to receive an exciting Gift Package from us! 4 women will be chosen and featured in a photoshoot compliments of Soulbox Photography.
OUR CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED!!! WE WILL BE CONTACTING OUR WINNERS SOON!
Nominate by emailing TheGirls@TheBraLounge.ca
Include your Nominee's full name, email and phone number.
Write a brief essay on your nominee's sacrifices, struggles, and triumphs. Your nominee must be or have been a Mom.
You will both be notified in the event your nominee's story is chosen.
Nominations will be accepted until midnight, Sunday, May 21, 2017, and winner's will be announced Wednesday, May 24th.
**Before submitting, please ensure your nominee would be comfortable with her story and picture being shared. Of course, sensitive details will be omitted from the feature at her request, and the photoshoot will be focused on her comfort and with discretion**
